2023 APIAL CHESS SEASON

Chess training and practice supports the development of higher-order thinking skills—like problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, planning, and even creative thinking. Chess training and practice also helps improve general cognitive ability and scholastic achievement—especially in mathematics.

STRUCTURE

The goal of the APIAL Chess program for 3rd-8th grade is to introduce the beneficial skills and concepts while fostering a love for the sport.  The season is structured to guide the beginner and challenge the experienced player.  Wednesday practices are both for the player that is just learning the moves of each piece and the player looking for new strategies.  Tournaments will be bracketed into 3 levels of play with teaching and reflective components after each game for the continued growth of players.
